Do you offer Leather Covers for your breeding phantoms?
Not at this time. We have only made 3 leather covers, each with a different Leather Craftsman and each time they said they didn’t want to make another one again, no matter how much $ I offered. One was made of saddle skirt leather, one from Latigo (I can’t remember what ounce), and the other was upholstery leather. The one of saddle skirt leather was amazing.
Do you offer discounts to Colleges and Universities?
Yes, absolutely! Our phantoms can be found across the United States at some of the finest Colleges and University that offer Equine Programs. We offer $200 off for accredited schools.
Do you sell AV’s (artificial vagina)?
No we don’t. But I do have strong recommendations. If you are looking for a Colorado AV I highly suggest you buy it from the original manufacturers Animal Reproduction Services, Inc. Here is a link to their AV Kit: – Their AV is extremely durable, and their quality control is unsurpassed. When you buy any supplies from ARS you can be assured it is properly manufactured to the standards needed for equine repro work. I had a client one time by a knock off Colorado Style AV from a big supply house. It had screw heads on the inside of the AV & their recommendation for cleaning the latex liners was to use Armor All! FYI Do NOT use Armor All, can you say spermicidal? If you are wanting to buy a Missouri AV, again I recommend you buy it from the original manufacturer Nasco.
Do you offer a floor mounted Phantom?
No, as shipping a floor mounted Phantom could get very expensive. But we have had several customer’s convert them once they get them. This was one done recently by a customer and I was very impressed.
What footing should I use?
I personally like DG (decomposed granite). It is forgiving and not dusty. Sand is a big no-no. A stallion can kick that up into the AV where it would stick to the lube. Cement is nice and clean but be sure and use good quality mats as young stallions are known to pass out and fall. Be careful of the rubber pavers. I don’t recommend them for outside as they warp from the weather and cause a tripping hazard for you and your stallion. Stallions need a smooth service when dismounting, nothing to get hung up on as they back off the mount.
How much space do I need?
You will need more space than you will ever imagine. And always leave yourself and your horses escape routes in case something goes wrong. During training you need room to maneuver a tease mare at the front of the phantom and be able to “escape” with her, if the stallion gets too close. Do you sell Bite Bars, Hips, or Fleece Covers?
Not at this time. But several made by other manufactures will work on our phantom as seen in the picture to the left. Animal Reproduction Services, Inc. sells a bite bar that will fit.
Should I set my phantom up Inside or Outside?
If you are lucky and have enough room inside would be the way to go. But you do need plenty of space to be safe. However, the SMS Breeding Phantom is designed to withstand the elements if you do locate it outside. Also, our phantoms can be removed when not in use. The lower legs are 3 feet in the ground but only stick up a few inches and can be covered up or counter sunk. To view pictures or some breeding areas visit our page – Breeding Areas
Can I buy a Replacement Cover?
Yes, we sell replacement covers. This material is very strong and does not stretch, so we do not recommend them for any phantom other than hours. If you are unsure if your phantom is ours, just email us a couple pictures and we will let you know. If you need foam, we can help with that too.
How easy is it to move the Phantom?
Easy, as the SMS Breeding Phantom is installed in the ground with two sleeves. We sell sleeves separately if you want your phantom available in two areas or if you are moving.
